Show Review: The Rose

The Rose - Columbus, OH 10/26/2023

By Emma Fischer

Korean pop-rock band The Rose took the stage last night in Columbus, performing a diverse setlist to over 2,000 fans on their Dawn to Dusk tour. The crowd that had once belonged to a half mile long line outside, filled in wall to wall across the sold out venue’s floor and balcony, eager to dance and sing the night away. As the lights went down and the four members made their appearance on stage, the audience’s energy immediately kicked into high gear and handheld light sticks decorated the venue.

The show started with a melodic intro that transitioned into a performance of recent songs off their latest album DUAL. While the album was released only a month ago, fans did not hesitate from singing along to every word. In addition to the crowd’s voices, each member flawlessly took turns singing while playing their own instruments. Vocals from guitarist Woosung and keyboardist Dojoon harmonize and complement each other with their own unique tone coloring over varying styles of songs, sung in both English and Korean. Sweeter sounding vocals in the performance of slower songs like “I.L.Y.” come from drummer Hajoon and bassist Jaehyeong. Upbeat pop-rock, softer ballads, and even alternative rock inspired songs like “Back To Me” all fit The Rose and their capability. Each of these song styles were accompanied by illuminated graphics glowing from a full stage screen to create a harmonious visual and listening experience. For the entirety of the show, the screen ranged from abstract visuals, lyrics, scenic nature, and pouring rain that no doubt enhanced each attendee’s memory of the night.

The chemistry between Woosung, Dojoon, Hajoon, and Jaehyeong and their set does not stop at their musical ability. The playful energy they share on stage makes the respect and adoration they have for one another as both artists and friends extremely palpable. Within two short hours, The Rose proved to each concert goer and their fans, Black Roses, exactly why they have obtained such global success. Easy to listen to, easier to watch, and beholding incredibly impressive talent, The Rose are undeniable rock stars.
